Zé Clementino was born in 1941 in Várzea Alegre, Ceará. He started performing in local bars and festivals in the early 1960s, and released his debut album in 1971. That album included "Hino de Várzea Alegre," which became his most recognizable song.
His music drew from the folk traditions of his region, with influences from artists like Luis Gonzaga and Jackson do Pandeiro. He worked in styles ranging from traditional forro to contemporary MPB, and collaborated with musicians including Gilberto Gil, Caetano Veloso, and Dominguinhos.
In 2010, he received the Ordem do Mérito Cultural for his contributions to Brazilian culture.
