Archive material and source history

Zé Costa was born José Costa de Lira in Campina Grande, Paraíba in 1950. He started playing accordion early, drawing from the traditional forró sounds of his region. In the 1970s, he formed a band called Zé Costa and Luiz Gonzaga's Men, which became his primary musical vehicle.

His 1977 song "Moça Brejeira" became his most recognizable track, with its playful lyrics and catchy melody. Other songs like "Nosso Ninho" and "Oração de Violeiro" also became part of his repertoire. While rooted in forró, his music sometimes incorporated elements from other styles, which occasionally drew criticism from traditionalists.

Zé Costa released several albums throughout the 1970s and early 1980s, including The Feijão de Corda in 1976 and The Pulse of the Northeast in 1980. His band featured musicians like Zeca Brito on bass and Elino Julião on triangle.
