Zé da Paraíba came from Cachoeira dos Índios in northeastern Brazil and spent his life with the berimbau, both making the instrument and playing it. He put out an album called 'O Fabricante de Berimbau' in 1978, which included the song of the same name. That track became his most recognized piece.
He worked with musicians like Chico Buarque and Caetano Veloso, and his brother João da Paraíba sometimes played viola sertaneja in his group. Zé da Paraíba also taught workshops about the berimbau and received Brazil's Ordem do Mérito Cultural.
