Archive material and source history
Zé da Viola (born José Antônio de Souza) and Diplomata (born José Gonzaga de Oliveira) met in the 1960s in São José do Rio Preto, São Paulo. They shared an interest in the viola caipira, a traditional Brazilian stringed instrument, and began performing together at local festivals and street corners. Their debut album came out in 1972.
Some of their songs, including "Sentimento," faced censorship and were kept off the radio. They kept recording anyway, putting out albums like "Retratos da Vida" in 1974 and "O Viola de Ouro" in 1977.
Zé da Viola died in 1984. Diplomata continued to perform and work with other musicians afterward. Their song "Sentimento" is still remembered.
