Archive material and source history
Zé Dantas was born José Raimundo de Souza in 1945 in Serrinha, Bahia. He started performing in local bars in the late 1960s, and his debut album 'A Volta da Asa Branca' came out in 1972. That record, along with songs like 'Vozes da Seca' and 'Forró de Caruaru,' drew from the traditional folk music of Brazil's Northeast region.
His music sometimes blended in other sounds, and he worked with artists like Alceu Valença and Gilberto Gil. Dantas recorded more than twenty albums, including 'Zé Dantas' in 1973 and 'Forró do Zé' in 1983. He died in 1997.
