Zé de Almeida was a Brazilian musician from the Northeast region, born José Alves de Almeida. He came from Riacho de Pedra, a place that would become central to his music. His song 'Adeus Riacho de Pedra' addressed the forced relocation of residents for dam construction, which led to his arrest in 1975.
He worked with a band that included musicians like Avelino Gomes on guitar and vocals, Juvenal Cartaxo on bass, and Geraldo Noé on drums. They released albums such as 'O Chico Que Mora Aqui' in 1975, 'Meu Xodó' in 1977, and 'O Poeta do Sertão' in 1980.
Zé de Almeida died in 2007. His music drew from the traditional rhythms of the sertão region, and he wrote lyrics in local dialect that spoke to the experiences of his community.
