Archive material and source history
Zé de Princesa formed in Salvador, Brazil in 1997, with Marcelo D2 on vocals and guitar, Fábio Boom and Alexandre Dengue on guitar, PJ on bass, and Fernando Gato and Adriano Dengue on percussion. They started playing local bars and parties, building a following with a mix of samba, reggae, and African rhythms.
Their song "Deixa Estar (desta)" came out in 2003 and became their most recognizable track. It topped Brazilian charts and helped define their sound, which leaned on D2's lyrics and the group's percussive drive.
They released four studio albums between 1999 and 2011, including the self-titled debut in 1999, "Deixa Estar" in 2003, "Meu Lugar" in 2006, and "A Festa É Sua" in 2011. The band toured regularly during those years, playing to full houses with their live shows.
