Archive material and source history
Zé Luiz do Império Serrano was born José Luiz dos Santos Santana in Rio de Janeiro in 1930. His father was a percussionist, and Zé Luiz grew up around samba schools in the city. In 1955, he joined Império Serrano, one of Rio's major samba schools, where he sang with a raspy voice that stood out.
In 1962, he released 'Amante Vadio,' a song about a woman caught between her husband and a lover. The lyrics caused a debate in Brazil, with some calling it immoral and others appreciating its directness. Despite the criticism, the song became widely known and remains his most recognized work.
He recorded other songs like 'Samba Chorão' and 'Não Vale a Pena Chorar' with Império Serrano, and the school won samba championships during his time there. Zé Luiz died in 1997, but 'Amante Vadio' still gets played in samba circles.
