Zé Magal Rosa was born José Magalhães Rosa in 1955. He started writing and performing in local bars and clubs around Rio de Janeiro as a teenager, drawing from samba and bossa nova. His debut album came out in 1978, and its title track 'Você...' became an immediate hit, known for its direct lyrics about unrequited love.
He kept recording through the 1980s and 1990s, putting out albums like 'Semente do Som' in 1981 and 'Rosa do Deserto' in 1985. His songs often dealt with poverty and social issues, which sometimes put him at odds with more conservative listeners. He worked with musicians like guitarist Paulo Moura and bassist Jorge Helder.
Zé Magal Rosa died in 1997 at age 41. His music has been covered by other Brazilian artists including Caetano Veloso and Gal Costa.
