Zé Maholics formed in Rio de Janeiro in the late 1990s. Their name plays on the Portuguese phrase "Zé Maníaco," suggesting a mischievous approach. They released their debut album "Naquela Noite" in 2002, which included the song "They Say I'm High." That track's lyrics about drug use drew criticism from some quarters while finding an audience with others.
Their music pulls from Brazilian rhythms, psychedelic rock, and hip-hop. Songs like "Gaivotas," "Macaco Politizado," and "Cachaça (part. Phillip Rios)" show their range. They've worked with collaborators including Phillip Rios, Machete Bomb, and André Prando on various tracks.
After their debut, Zé Maholics put out several more albums including "Ao Vivo" in 2005, "Um Dia Como Outro" in 2007, and "Meio-Fio" in 2017. The core lineup featured vocalist and guitarist Zeca Baleiro, drummer André Jungmann, and bassist Pedro Sá.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
