Archive material and source history
Zé Maria was born José Maria de Oliveira e Silva in 1949 on the outskirts of Rio de Janeiro. He grew up hearing samba and bossa nova, but it was rock music in the 1960s that showed him how songs could carry political weight. In 1973, he formed the band Zé Maria e Seu Povo, and their music quickly found an audience among young Brazilians.
The government saw his work as subversive, and in 1976 he was arrested on marijuana charges and spent several months in prison. Other songs from his catalog include "Por Amor," "A Ponte Dos Desejos," and "Acorrentado."
He released albums like Terra Brasilis in 1980 and Ácústico in 2003. His band included musicians like Rodrigo Merlo on bass and Pedro Mamede on drums.
