Archive material and source history
José Mario Pereira da Silva, known as Zé Mario Drums, came from Itabuna, Bahia, where he grew up around samba, axé, and forró. He started drumming early, using whatever household items he could find to practice. In the 1980s he formed his band, and their 1988 debut album 'Coração Cigano' took off nationally, with the title track becoming a hit.
That song, along with 'Grão de Areia,' helped define his sound, a mix of Brazilian rhythms with some electronic touches.
There was a plagiarism dispute in 2005 over 'Coração Cigano' that briefly got the song pulled from radio, but he was cleared later. His band included musicians like Jorge Caetano on guitar and Paulo Guedes on bass. The music still gets played, especially that 1988 single, which stuck around as a Brazilian favorite.
