Zé Mattos formed his band in Rio de Janeiro in 1982, with a lineup that included bassist Antônio Carlos Santos, guitarist Jorge Alfredo, saxophonist Carlos Malta, and drummer Marcos Suzano. Their sound pulled from traditional Brazilian rhythms alongside jazz, rock, and funk. The band's debut album came out in 1985 and featured the song "A Bad Mata," which became a breakout hit.
They followed up with albums like "Nação Zumbi" in 1986, "Verde, Amarelo, Vermelho" in 1989, and "Cabeça de Nego" in 1992. Other songs in their catalog include "Diferenciado," "Halls de Melancia," and "É Gaia." The core members of the band have stayed relatively consistent over time, with Mattos, Santos, Suzano, Malta, and Alfredo all playing together for years.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
