Zé Mota started performing in the mid-1980s with a band called Fogo na Roupa. Their first album came out in 1986. He went solo a couple years later and put out a record called 'Soldado Abatido' in 1988, which gave him his biggest song of the same name.

His music often deals with social themes and personal struggles. Besides 'Soldado Abatido,' he's recorded songs like 'Amor Sem Barreira,' 'Lance Finalizado,' and 'Amiga e Traição.' He's worked with other Brazilian musicians including Zezé di Camargo, who sang with him on 'Soldado Abatido.'

He's from Juazeiro do Norte in Ceará. Some of his other albums include 'Mais Amor' from 1991, 'Daqui Pra Frente' from 1994, and 'Aquarela Nordestina' from 2014.
