Zé Nascimento was born José Onofre Nascimento in Macaíba, a rural town in Rio Grande do Norte. Growing up there meant hearing the regional sounds of forró, xaxado, and baião, which shaped his musical foundation.
In 1997, he met producer Adoniran Oliveira, who gave him a recording contract. That led to his self-titled debut album, which included the song "Não Chores." The track became an immediate hit and remains his best-known work.
He went on to release other albums like "Nasci pra Chorar" in 2000, "Ainda Agora" in 2002, and a live recording from Recife in 2004. His band included musicians like Gerson Silva on bass, Roberto Dias on drums, and Zé Lima on accordion.
At times, his career faced public scrutiny over plagiarism accusations and personal matters. He has worked with artists including Gilberto Gil, Caetano Veloso, and Roberta Sá.
