Zé Pagão formed his band in 1980 in Vila Verde, a town in northern Portugal. The group included guitarists António Batista and José Carlos, and their music drew from Portuguese folk and fado traditions while incorporating rock and pop touches. They released their first album in 1982.
In 1982, Zé Pagão put out "Moda dos Meses," a song that became widely known in Portugal. Its simple melody and lyrics listing the months of the year connected with listeners, and it remains his most recognized work. The band released several more albums through the 1980s, including "Segura a Nuvem" in 1983 and "As Quatro Estações" in 1986.
Zé Pagão died in 1990. His music, particularly "Moda dos Meses," continues to be heard in Portugal.
