Editor's note

Zé Pagão e Fostino, forró's rough-edged duo from Ceará

A pair of northeastern Brazilian musicians who played energetic forró for two decades.

For their sound, try 'Borda da Mata.' For something a little different, 'Na Boca da Cobra' has that rougher feel they were known for.

They brought a raw, sometimes explicit edge to the forró tradition of Luiz Gonzaga and Jackson do Pandeiro. Songs like 'Borda da Mata' and 'Rosa Marcada' became staples in their live sets. Their music, including the album 'Briga de Casado,' still gets played today.

They started performing together in the early 1980s in Ceará, with Zé Pagão on vocals and Fostino on accordion. They released albums through the late '80s and '90s, like 'Só Forró' in 1990. They performed together for about twenty years until Zé Pagão's death in 2006.

Zé Pagão (born José Ricardo da Silva) and Fostino (born Francisco Ferreira de Sousa) came from Ceará in northeastern Brazil. They started performing together in the early 1980s, drawing on the forró rhythms of artists like Luiz Gonzaga and Jackson do Pandeiro. Their stage presence was energetic, with Zé Pagão handling lead vocals and Fostino on accordion.

Songs like 'Rosa Marcada,' 'Roceiro do Brasil,' and 'Borda da Mata' became part of their repertoire. They released albums including 'Briga de Casado' in 1985 and 'Só Forró' in 1990. Their music sometimes mixed forró with other styles, and their lyrics could be explicit, which led to some criticism.

They performed together for about twenty years. Zé Pagão died in 2006 and Fostino in 2009. People still listen to tracks like 'Na Boca da Cobra' and 'Juriti.'
