Editor's note

Zé Tapera e Teodoro, Pernambuco's forró duo

A pair from northeastern Brazil who turned local bar gigs into a lasting catalog of forró hits.

For a sense of their range, try 'Tchau Amor' for the radio hit and 'Lar Sem Mãe' from their top songs list, it shows that blend of forró and something a little more modern.

They gave Brazilian radio a durable staple with 'Tchau Amor' in 1990, a song that sparked plagiarism accusations they denied. Their sound mixed forró rhythms with contemporary touches on tracks like 'Lar Sem Mãe' and 'Aonde Está Meu Bem,' sticking to their roots while reaching a wider audience. Even through personal struggles, Zé Tapera's addiction, Teodoro's health issues, they kept performing into the 2000s.

They started playing in Pernambuco bars and festivals, working other jobs until producer Zé Ramalho helped them release their first album, 'Forró do Bode,' in 1986. 'Tchau Amor' in 1990 became their biggest hit, and they recorded through the 1990s and 2000s despite personal challenges, with Zé Tapera passing away in 2018.

Zé Tapera (born José Maria Batista) and Teodoro (born Antônio Teodoro da Silva) came from Pernambuco in northeastern Brazil. They started playing in local bars and festivals, working other jobs to get by while they pursued music. In 1986, with help from producer Zé Ramalho, they put out their first album, 'Forró do Bode.'

Their second album, 'Tchau Amor,' came out in 1990 and gave them their biggest hit with the title track. The song became a staple on Brazilian radio. Their catalog includes songs like 'Lar Sem Mãe,' 'Trevas da Noite,' and 'Aonde Está Meu Bem,' which blend forró rhythms with more contemporary sounds.

In 1991, there were accusations that 'Tchau Amor' plagiarized another song, which the duo denied. Zé Tapera struggled with addiction, and Teodoro faced health problems, but they kept performing and recording through the 1990s and 2000s. Zé Tapera died in 2018 at age 63.
