Zeca Costa was born João Bosco de Freitas Costa in Fortaleza, where he grew up hearing traditional Brazilian folk and forró. He started writing and playing music as a teenager. In 1995, his debut album 'Doido' came out, and the title track became a national hit with its raw energy and transgressive lyrics.
That song's success brought him wider attention, but his explicit material and outspoken style also drew criticism. In 2000, he was arrested for obscenity after performing 'Brincar de Médico' at a festival, which sparked public debate about artistic freedom. He kept recording through the following decades, putting out more than ten studio albums that mixed rock, forró, and funk.
His band has included Marcelo Costa on bass, Fred Dantas on drums, Jorge Sacramento on guitar, and Rodrigo Costa on keyboards. Other songs like 'Amarelo Com Marrom' and 'Quase Nada' show his range. He has worked with artists such as Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil, and Carlinhos Brown.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
