Zeca da Casa Verde is the stage name of José Carlos da Silva, who took it from the Casa Verde neighborhood in São Paulo where he grew up. In the early 2000s, he started working with percussionist Juliano da Silva and vocalist Fernanda Takai, and they put out a self-titled album in 2006.
His song 'Congada' came out in 2009 and became his most recognized track. It draws on Afro-Brazilian heritage and addresses social themes, which became a consistent thread in his work. Other songs like 'Bloco do Chora Galo' and 'O Brasil Recebe o Mundo de Braços Abertos' followed on later albums such as 'Desperte' (2012) and 'Sermão do Avesso' (2016).
His lyrics often touch on racial inequality and cultural identity, which has drawn both attention and criticism. He's kept releasing music, with 'Missa do Diabo' coming out in 2020.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
