Zeca Tocantins is the stage name of José Ribamar dos Santos Júnior, who took it from his hometown in Brazil. He formed his first band, Os Inocentes, and in 1987 they released a debut album that included the song "Deixa," which became an immediate hit. That track, along with others like "Estiagem" and "Lá Onde Moro," helped establish his presence in Brazilian music.
His work has sometimes drawn attention for its lyrics, which can touch on social or political themes. In 1996, he was arrested after a concert, though the details around that incident remain part of his story rather than defining it. He has recorded with artists like Gilberto Gil and Caetano Veloso, and put out albums such as "Casa das Máquinas" in 1990 and "Rádio Tocantins" in 1993.
Zeca Tocantins performs with a band that includes Renato Cardoso on bass, Augusto de Carvalho on drums, Marcelo Benites on keyboards, and Pedro Altério on guitar. He continues to write and record, with releases like "Primavera" coming out in 2007.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
