Zecrinha Batista was born José Batista da Silva in Pernambuco, in northeastern Brazil. He learned accordion from local musicians there, drawing from forró and baião traditions along with samba and rock.
His 1968 song "Forró do Caratacá" became a hit, establishing him in the forró scene. He went on to record albums like "Adeus, Meu Amor," "Minha Vida É Forró," and "O Rei do Forró." Some critics felt he was commercializing the genre, but he kept performing with a band that often included other accordion players.
Zecrinha Batista died in 2010. His recordings, including "Forró do Caratacá," remain part of Brazilian forró.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
