Zed formed in Manila in 1999, with Zed Lejano on vocals, Jomal Linao on bass, and Marvin Querido on drums. Their self-titled debut album came out in 2002, and tracks like 'Glorafilla' and 'Renegade Fighter' caught on with listeners. The band's early material mixed hip-hop and rock with a direct, energetic feel.
They kept recording through the 2000s, putting out albums like 'Sound of Zed' in 2005 and 'Bazooka' in 2008. Querido, the drummer, died in 2006. Lejano remained the consistent frontman through lineup changes and the band's shifts in sound, which moved toward more melodic writing on later records such as 'Dapat Tama' from 2012.
Some of their lyrics drew criticism for being explicit or confrontational, though the group generally shrugged that off. They released 'Renegado' in 2021. Songs like 'Starlight' and 'Baby's Got Me Up All Night' show the range of their catalog, from harder-edged anthems to more polished, radio-ready tracks.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
