Zelito Expresso Forronejo formed in 1994 in Aracaju, Sergipe, with Zelito (born José Wellington da Silva) leading the group. Their sound took traditional forró and gave it a modern push, which caught on quickly. In 1996, they had a breakthrough with the single 'Sou Vaqueiro e Me Garanto,' a song that spoke to the pride of Northeastern cowboys.
That modern approach sometimes drew criticism from traditionalists, especially as they mixed in elements like reggae and axé. Zelito's stage presence could be provocative too, in 2008, he was arrested for public indecency after a concert dance move. The band kept playing through it all, releasing albums like 'Forró de 1ª' in 1996 and 'Forró Com Alegria' in 1998.
They worked with other Brazilian artists, including accordionist Dominguinhos and singer Ivete Sangalo. The core lineup featured Zelito on vocals, zabumba, and triangle, with Josias on accordion, Tonca on bass, Izaías on guitar, and Samuel on percussion. Their music appeared in some Brazilian telenovelas, and they put out a compilation called '20 Anos de Sucesso' in 2014.
