Editor's note

Zeljko Bebek, from Bijelo Dugme to solo hits

A rock singer who helped shape Yugoslav music before building his own catalog.

For the band era, 'Djurdjevdan' is the touchstone. His solo side comes through on something like 'Kako doslo tako proslo'.

Bebek's voice anchored Bijelo Dugme's blend of rock and Balkan rhythms on songs like 'Djurdjevdan'. After the band dissolved, his solo work, including 'Dobila si što si tražila', kept him in the public ear even as his career faced interruptions. He's one of those figures where the music and the personal history are hard to separate.

He started with Bijelo Dugme in the late 1960s, singing their hits. The 1980 song 'Ko Ce Da Mi Sudi' launched his solo phase, which continued through albums like 1991's 'Mama'. Later years included legal troubles that paused his output.

Archive material and source history

Zeljko Bebek was born in Split in 1945. In the late 1960s, he joined guitarist Goran Bregovic and drummer Ipe Ivandić to form the rock band Bijelo Dugme, which blended rock with traditional Balkan rhythms. The band had hits like 'Djurdjevdan' and 'Ima Neka Tajna Veza' before dissolving in the early 1980s.

After Bijelo Dugme ended, Bebek started a solo career. His 1980 song 'Ko Ce Da Mi Sudi' helped establish him as a popular solo artist. He kept recording through the 1990s, including the 1991 album 'Mama' that dealt with themes of love and loss.

As a solo artist, Bebek recorded songs like 'Kako doslo tako proslo,' 'Dobila si što si tražila,' and 'Drugovi se moji žene.' His music sometimes drew criticism for its political content, and in the early 2000s he faced legal issues related to insurance fraud that briefly interrupted his work.
