Zem formed in Porto, Portugal in 1999, with Zé Pedro on vocals and guitar, Heitor Gomes on guitar, Paulo Furtado on bass, and Pedro Correia on drums. They released their self-titled debut album that same year, followed by records like Forte in 2000 and Alma in 2002. Their 2006 single "Nhô Quim" drew some criticism for its subject matter.
Their song "João Sem Medo" became something of an anthem in Portugal, telling the story of a warrior facing adversity. Another track, "Louca Paixão," appears in their catalog. The band's music often mixed rock with Portuguese folk elements, with Zé Pedro's vocals over guitar-driven arrangements.
They kept recording through the 2000s and 2010s, putting out albums like Onde? in 2004, Outeiro in 2006, and Clair Obscur in 2009. A live album called Zé Live! came out in 2013, and they released a compilation titled 1999-2019 in 2019.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
