Zenildo Tenfen came up playing accordion in Pernambuco's small towns and local festivals. In the early 1990s, his band had a breakthrough with the song "Xote Dos Namorados," which became a hit across Brazil.
He kept recording and performing, putting out albums like "Forró do Coração" in 1997 and "Pé de Serra" in 2004. His music stayed rooted in xote and other northeastern rhythms.
Tenfen's career included some public difficulties, including a drug possession arrest in 2000. He remained an outspoken figure at times, which drew mixed reactions. Through it all, he continued to work with a steady band lineup that included musicians like Zé do Forró on bass.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
