Zensei formed in São Paulo around 2013 with Felipe Zancanaro on vocals, Bruno Mello on guitar, Caio Loureiro on drums, and Bárbara Morais on bass. They worked in experimental and psychedelic territory, and their song 'Viagens' came out in 2014. The track's layered instrumentals and vocals about mental health and self-discovery connected with listeners, becoming a fan favorite.
They released albums like 'Flores Raras' in 2016 and 'O Silêncio das Árvores' in 2019. The band collaborated with Gilberto Gil and Amon Tobin at points, which brought some wider exposure to their atmospheric sound. Their lineup stayed mostly consistent over those years.
Critics sometimes called their music too esoteric for mainstream tastes, but Zensei kept working in their own lane. Their music found an audience among people looking for something introspective and textured, and 'Viagens' stayed their most recognized piece.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
