Zeph formed in Los Angeles around 2016 with Joe Keery on vocals and guitar, Matt Hess on bass, and Dylan Niehaus on drums. Keery's acting work on 'Stranger Things' drew some early attention that wasn't always about the music, but the band kept writing and playing.
Their first album 'Bittersweet' came out in 2018, followed by 'Don't You Want Me' in 2020. Songs like 'could you love me while i hate myself' and 'are you?' show their tendency toward direct, emotionally charged lyrics about relationships and self-doubt. The writing tends to stay personal rather than abstract.
They work in an alternative rock space without much fuss about genre boundaries. The sound evolved from the rougher edges of 'Bittersweet' to something a bit more polished on the second record, but the focus remains on Keery's vocals and straightforward song structures. Tracks like 'Forever & Always' and 'Miss Me' are built around familiar guitar patterns and earnest delivery.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
