Zero17 formed in Brasilia in the late 1970s, with Renato Russo on vocals, Billy Bond on guitar, and Guilherme Arantes on bass. They released their debut album 'Caminhos Secretos' in 1983. The following year's 'Enganos e Fracassos' became their breakthrough, with the title track resonating widely. Other songs from that period include 'Inevitável Dizer' and 'Me Faz Lembrar'.
Russo's lyrics often dealt with personal struggles, which gave their music a raw quality that connected with listeners. The band's live shows developed a reputation for intensity. Their lineup changed at times, with musicians like Ney Matogrosso on drums and Dado Villa-Lobos on guitar appearing in different periods.
They released several more albums through the mid-1980s, including 'O Silêncio dos Inocentes' in 1985 and 'Vida e Obra de Zero17' in 1986. Renato Russo died in 1996.
