Her grandfather was the musician Luiz Gonzaga, and she started singing early. Songs like 'Sou Apenas Uma Senhora Que Ainda Canta' and 'Cerejeira Rosa' became well-known. She worked with musicians including her husband, guitarist José Carlos Capinan, and sometimes with other Brazilian artists like Chico Buarque and Caetano Veloso.
She was born in Rio de Janeiro in 1940. In 1964 she put out her first album, 'A Rosa e a Rosa.' She kept writing and recording, and her voice stayed recognizable for its expressiveness.
