Zezinho da Ema was born José Fernandes de Sousa in 1941, and grew up with the musical traditions of northeastern Brazil. He performed at small venues early on, and his style was sometimes called unconventional. His songs like 'Tapete Pro Meu Pé' and 'Vento do Norte' are part of a catalog that includes over twenty studio albums.
He was briefly imprisoned. The music itself has a raw vocal quality and intricate guitar work, heard on tracks such as 'De Coração Pra Coração' and 'Herança de Um Vaqueiro'.
He retired from touring in 2017. A song like 'Tapete Pro Meu Pé' has been recognized as part of Brazil's cultural heritage.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
