Zezinho Matogrosso, born José Ribamar Ferreira dos Santos, started singing in his hometown of Araguacema, Tocantins. He moved to Rio de Janeiro and formed the band Blitz in 1980 with Evandro Mesquita, Antônio Pedro Mendonça, and Márcia Bulcão. Their debut album 'As Aventuras da Blitz 1' included hits like 'Você Não Soube Me Amar' and 'Weekend'.
His most recognized song is 'Bicho Homem' from 1982. Its lyrics and video sparked conversations about gender and sexuality in Brazil at the time. The band's mix of pop, rock, and Brazilian rhythms found an audience, though Zezinho's style sometimes drew criticism.
After Blitz ended in 1985, he worked on solo albums like 'Feitiço' in 1989 and 'É Puro Êxtase' in 2001. He also recorded with other Brazilian musicians including Gilberto Gil and Caetano Veloso.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
