Zezinho Nascimento was born in Salvador, Bahia in 1952. He wrote his first song at age 12, drawing from the samba, reggae, and early axé sounds around him. In the mid-1980s, his album 'Acabou' brought him national attention, with the title track becoming something of an anthem.
His music mixed Afro-Brazilian rhythms with reggae, samba, and soul elements, which sometimes drew criticism from traditionalists. He kept recording through the 80s and 90s, putting out albums like 'O Canto da Cidade' and 'Mundo de Axé'. Songs like 'Desejo de Te Amar' and 'Lutando Contra o Tempo' show his blend of poetic lyrics and rhythmic drive.
He worked with musicians like Carlinhos Brown on percussion and Armandinho Macedo on guitar. Nascimento died in 2013 at age 61.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
