Zezinho Souza grew up in Paulo Afonso, Bahia, where he started writing songs as a teenager. He drew from local rhythms like forró and baião, playing in bands around town before things took off in the 1990s. That's when his song 'Restos de Ilusão' caught on nationally, its lyrics and melody connecting with listeners across Brazil.
He's put out more than twenty albums since then, working with artists like Gilberto Gil and Elba Ramalho along the way. His band includes Zé Pretinho on bass, Marquinhos on drums, and a few others who back him up live. In 2004, he was arrested on drug charges, a setback that didn't end his career but did mark a rough patch.
These days he still tours, playing the songs people know. There's no grand statement to make about it, just a musician from the northeast who wrote a hit that stuck around.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
