Zhao Lei was born in Beijing in 1986. He started with folk and blues, and his lyrics often draw from Chinese literary figures like Lao She and Shen Congwen. His debut album 'The Storyteller' came out in 2012, and its single 'Jia Xiang' connected with listeners who missed their hometowns.
He followed with albums like 'Chengdu' in 2014, which includes the song 'Cheng Du', and later ones such as 'The Sunlight Project' and 'The Midnight'. His music stays mostly folk and blues, with straightforward storytelling. Other songs like 'Shi Jiu Su' and 'Huà' show his style.
In 2016, a concert tour was canceled, which some linked to his lyrics. He kept recording, putting out 'Wind and Rain and Sunshine' in 2022. He works as a solo artist but has played with musicians like bassist Li Jun and guitarist Wang Xi.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
