Zheng Jun came up in the 1980s Chinese rock scene, putting out his first album 'Naked' in 1994. His music pulled from folk and blues, but it was the straightforward rock of 'Hui Gu Niang' that really connected with listeners in 1997. That song, from his second album 'Naked II', became a kind of anthem for a certain restlessness at the time.
He was born in Heilongjiang in 1967 and started his first band around 1984. He kept recording through the 2000s and 2010s, with albums like 'Red', 'Six Seconds', and 'Factory'.
His band has included guitarists Wang Xinbo and Meng Qi, bassist Li Fei, and drummer Li Qi. While he's released several albums since, that period in the late 90s, with 'Hui Gu Niang' as a focal point, is what cemented his place for a lot of people who followed Chinese rock.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
