Zhu Ponciano was a Brazilian musician born in Rio de Janeiro in 1911. He started playing guitar as a child and later developed as a vocalist. In the 1930s, he performed with the band Os Cariocas, touring Brazil and abroad.
In 1939, Ponciano recorded Ary Barroso's composition "Aquarela Brasileira," which became his signature song. The recording gained international attention and remains his most recognized work. During World War II, he was imprisoned for criticizing Brazilian government censorship policies.
Ponciano's discography included samba and bossa nova recordings, and he worked with musicians like Tom Jobim and Vinicius de Moraes. His band featured guitarist Zé da Zilda, violinist João Pernambuco, cavaquinist Turquinho, and bandleader Waldir Azevedo.
