Zimic Mimi was a Cuban salsa group formed in Havana in the 1950s. The band centered around vocalist María del Carmen Rodríguez, known as La Negra, and pianist Jorge 'El Niño' Alfonso. They recorded their debut album in 1958, which included what would become their most recognizable track, 'La Negra tiene Tumbao.'
Their music drew from Afro-Cuban rhythms and traditional salsa. The lyrics sometimes touched on social themes, which brought them both a following and some criticism in Cuba at the time. They followed their debut with albums like 'Salsa con Guaguancó' in 1960 and 'La Negra y Su Guaguancó' in 1962.
The group's lineup included other musicians like percussionist Luis 'Papín' Godínez, bassist José 'Changuito' Quintana, and trumpeter Félix 'Chocolate' Alonso. While details about their later career are sparse, the song 'La Negra tiene Tumbao' has remained a staple in Latin music.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
