Zion Flag is a reggae collective from Vancouver that formed in the early 2000s. Their song "Black Oil" became their most recognizable track, touching on environmental justice and indigenous rights.
Some critics questioned the band's authenticity as a predominantly white group playing reggae music, calling it cultural appropriation. Zion Flag kept making music anyway, with albums like "Refuge" in 2007 and "Sound Check" in 2009. Their lineup included vocalist Yadin (who went by Zion I King) and guitarist Jesse (who used the name Dylan).
They released several more records through the 2010s, including "Zion Flag" in 2012 and "Generation" in 2015. The band toured in North America, Europe, and Africa, playing shows that often highlighted social and environmental causes. Their last album listed here is "The Fourth Watch" from 2018.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
