Zion Golan is an Israeli singer who came up in Jerusalem. His 2009 debut single 'Aba Shimon' became a hit, a tribute to a Kabbalist that caught on with its mix of soulful vocals and a beat people could latch onto. That song is still one of his most recognized tracks.
He grew up in a Moroccan Jewish household where his father was a cantor, so religious music was part of the air he breathed. At the same time, the street culture around him brought in hip-hop. You can hear both of those threads in songs like 'Aba Sholom Shabazi' and 'Ayelet Chen'.
His band has included guitarist Eyal Levi, bassist Yossi Shwartz, drummer Noam Starkman, and keyboardist Adi Lev Ari. They've worked on albums like Zohar from 2011 and Kol HaOlam Kulo from 2014. Later records like Matok Midvash kept his voice in the mix, even when some lyrics drew criticism.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
