The Zion Travelers began as a trio of brothers from Mobile, Alabama. Claude, Eugene, and Roy Jeter started singing together in 1936, performing at local churches and community gatherings. They eventually took their music on the road, with their first national tour happening in 1947.

Their song "I Must Tell Jesus" became particularly well-known among gospel listeners. They recorded other songs too, including "Didn't It Rain," "Stand By Me," and "The Blood Will Never Lose Its Power." The group's lineup changed over time, with musicians like Willie Neal Johnson, Robert Johnson, and James Moore joining at various points.

In 1998, the Zion Travelers were inducted into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame.
