Archive material and source history
Zionomi formed in Kingston in 1995, with brothers Anthony and Carlton Ogilvie joining bassist Clifford Bonnick. They took their name from Mount Zion, and their early shows at local clubs built a following. Their debut album came out in 1997.
Their second album, 'Roll Yuh,' arrived in 2000 and gave them an international hit with its title track. The song's lyrics about unity drew some criticism from religious groups, which the band addressed by saying it was meant as a spiritual call.
Later albums like 'Jah Is Real' and 'New Jerusalem' kept them active through the 2000s. Carlton Ogilvie left in 2005, while Anthony stayed on as lead vocalist. Their music sometimes incorporated R&B or hip-hop touches while staying grounded in reggae.
