ZIZ formed in the early 2000s as a musical collective with members Levi Wilkinson on vocals, Aaron Zarzour on guitar, J.P. Bowman on bass, and Eric Marani on drums. Their debut album 'Sanityman' came out in 2006 and gave them their most recognizable song of the same name.
They released several more albums over the next decade, including 'The Observer' in 2009, 'The Ritual' in 2012, and 'Sanctuary' in 2015. Their sound shifted at times, with 'The Ritual' incorporating electronic elements while 'Sanctuary' returned to more ethereal territory.
The band faced some legal disputes over music ownership and had internal tensions that led to lineup changes and a brief hiatus. Their cryptic lyrics and stage presence occasionally drew allegations of cult-like behavior, which they denied, and their political views sometimes divided listeners.
In 2019 they put out 'Echoes,' a compilation of B-sides and unreleased material.
