Zodiac Mindwarp and the Love Reaction formed in 1985 around frontman Mark Manning, who had previously been in 23 Skidoo. Their debut album 'Psychodelicatessen' came out the following year, establishing their raw, distorted sound and confrontational lyrics. The band's lineup included bassist Paul Steel, guitarist Darren Wharton, and drummer John Phillips.
They gained wider attention with the 1988 single 'Backseat Education,' which became something of an anthem for disaffected youth at the time. Other songs like 'Prime Mover' and 'Planet Girl' followed a similar template of aggressive rock with provocative themes. Their live shows were known for being raucous and confrontational.
Darren Wharton left the band in 1989 and was replaced by Shorty Bill. The Love Reaction disbanded in 1991, though Manning continued performing under the Zodiac Mindwarp name with various musicians. Their music, particularly 'Psychodelicatessen' and songs like 'Backseat Education,' developed a cult following in certain rock circles.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
