Zola Project formed in Spain's Basque Country in 2003, with vocalist Kyo (born Iker Piedrafita) joining guitarist Iñigo Etxebarrieta and bassist Jon Pagola. The band took its name from French writer Émile Zola. Kyo had previously worked in theater before turning to music.
Their song "Pessimist And Fake Optimist" became a signature track, touching on themes of duality that ran through much of their work. They released albums including "Alabak" in 2005, "Zola" in 2007, and "Bilbao" in 2010.
Kyo's lyrics sometimes drew criticism in Spain for their introspective nature and focus on difficult subjects. The band's sound incorporated rock, electronic elements, folk, and Basque musical traditions. Over time, Mikel Abrego replaced Etxebarrieta on guitar and Xabi Erkizia took over bass from Pagola, while Kyo remained the constant frontman.
