Zona 84 formed in Mexico City around 1984, taking their name from the city's postal code. The group included Ernesto Moncada, José Luis Pardo, Humberto Alvarez, and Mauricio Rodriguez. Their first album 'Cacería' came out in 1985 and featured the song 'Aburrido,' which became a hit across Mexico.
They kept releasing records through the late 80s and 90s, like 'Rompecabezas' in 1987 and 'El Tumbao' in 1995. Their sound mixed funk with rock and pop elements, and they had other tracks like '10 Años' and 'El Censor' that people remembered.
In 1987, a Mexico City concert turned into a clash between fans and police, which led to a temporary ban on their shows there. Some of their lyrics also drew criticism at the time for how they handled social topics. Moncada wrote most of their material, and while the lineup shifted over time, the band stayed active in Mexican music.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
