Zonai MC came out of Lisbon with a sound that didn't fit neatly into what Portuguese rap was supposed to be. Their debut album in 2014, 'Droga Eu Fui No Encontro a Toa,' gave them a foothold, and they followed it with 'Estragos' in 2016 and 'Corpo Fechado' in 2018. The group included Jimmy P on vocals, Capicua rapping, Sam The Kid producing, and DJ Cruzfader on turntables.
Their lyrics took on urban life without softening the edges, which meant some listeners heard glorification where others heard plain talk about neighborhoods that don't get much airtime. Songs like 'Hora do Café' and 'Poeira Estelar' worked because they felt specific, not anthemic.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
