Zooi formed in Salvador, Brazil in 1997 with vocalist Larissa Luz, guitarist Marcos Valle, bassist Jhon Gonçalves, and drummer Marcos Suzano. Their debut album 'Acho Que Nã o' came out in 1999, and the title track became a hit with its mix of pop, reggae, and Afro-Brazilian rhythms.
Some of their songs addressed social issues directly. 'Nã o Me Toca' was about sexual harassment and sparked conversation in Brazil. In 2003, their record label went bankrupt, which created financial problems, but they kept touring and putting out music independently.
They released albums like 'Naçã o Zumbi' in 2005, 'Vamo Alcanç ar' in 2009, and 'Zombirama' in 2014. Their sound incorporated funk, soul, and electronic elements over time. They worked with other Brazilian artists including Jorge Ben Jor, Carlinhos Brown, and Ivete Sangalo.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
