Zoom-Zoom was an experimental band that formed in the late 1970s around vocalist Alice Willow and guitarist Alex Blackwood. Their sound drew from experimental jazz and noise, creating something that felt both ethereal and dissonant. They released a handful of albums in the early 1980s, including 'Etheria' in 1981 and 'Zealot' in 1983.
Their most recognized track is 'Acetone (Song of the 5 Wounded Hearts),' which appeared on their 1985 album of the same name. The song pairs Willow's haunting vocals with Blackwood's unorthodox guitar work, creating a sparse, unsettling atmosphere. Other songs like 'Alone' and 'Tonight' follow a similar path, built around minimal arrangements and emotional weight rather than conventional structure.
Their approach wasn't always welcomed by critics or the mainstream, with some dismissing it as pretentious. But they kept working, putting out 'The Unseen' in 1988 before fading from view. What's left is a small catalog that feels deliberately out of step with its time, anchored by that stark, lingering 'Acetone' track.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
